Namun, akibat gempa bumi dan gunung meletus yang terjadi ribuan tahun lampau, daratan itu terlepas menjadi pulau-pulau baru, yakni Pulau Weh, Pulau Rondo, Pulau Rubiah, Pulau Seulako, dan Pulau Klah. Nama Pulau Weh sendiri berasal dari bahasa Aceh, weh, yang berarti `pindah&#8217;, \u2018lepas\u2019, atau `geser&#8217;. Ulee Lheue juga berasal dari kata Ulee Lheueh, yang artinya &#8216;terlepas&#8217;.
